      C. Answer the Following Questions:
1.     Name the five important factors that determine the climate of a place.
Ans: The climate of a place is influenced by several factors:
a.     Latitude or distance from the equator.
b.     Altitude or height above the sea level.
c.      Distance from the sea.
d.     Humidity
e.     Direction of winds.

2.     How does (a) latitude (b) altitude affect the climate of a place?
Ans:
a.     Latitude or Distance from the equator: The earth’s surface is heated by the rays of the sun. Places located near or on the equator receive direct rays of sun. Slanting rays have to travel through a greater distance so they lose most of the heat. So the closer a place to the equator, the hotter is its climate. The closer a place is to the poles, the cooler is the climate.
b.     Altitude or height above the sea level: The rays of the sun heat the surface of the earth. This heated surface then heats the atmosphere. Places at higher altitudes are lower. That is why hill stations are colder than plains even in summer.

3.     How do winds affect the climate of a place?
Ans: Winds have a great affect on the climate of a place. Depending from where the winds originates, they may be cool, hot, dry, or full of moisture. Winds blowing from desert areas are hot and dry while those blowing from the sea are cool and moist. For example, Delhi is hot in summer due to the dry winds blowing from Rajasthan.

4.     How does the climate of a place affect the people living there?
Ans: Climate of a place affects the people living there. Our clothing, housing, transportation and food that we eat are all influenced by the climate of the place we live in.
E. Value Corner:
1. Winds can be so powerful that it can even uproot the strongest of the trees. Do you think it is good to show power by harming others? Why? / Why not?
Ans: No, it is not good to show power by harming others. We should not show our power on the persons who are below to us. Rather we should use our power help and uplift others.
